Grandma

I will forever carry my nani's love with me.

Woolly pink
Wrapped around my neck
It smells of love,
Of plump fingers,
And of love again.
It smells of grandma
Sitting in her rocking chair
Knitting scarves and sweaters
For her children far away.

She would cook if they were here,
Make them breakfast in bed,
Feed them to their heart's content.
She would give them kisses
And hugs that last forever.
She would shower them with love
Unconditional
The love that only a grandparent can give.
The love that is now leftover
Growing and growing but with nowhere to go
Love that stays when everyone’s left
Left her sitting alone
In her little rocking chair.

So she knits it all,
Even herself,
Into the scarves and sweaters
That will wrap around
Her grandchildren
As if she were there.
That will hug them forever
As if she were there.

So, in this woolly pink,
Wrapped around my neck,
I smell my grandmother
And her love that awaits.
